Ipheion cultivars has about twenty species, however only a few species are cultivated on a small scale. The bulbs should be left in the ground to perennialize and to form beautiful clumps of flowers. The flowers are star-shaped, solitary and have a soapy odor. The grass-like leaves, when crushed, have a faint onion smell. Although it is hardy, Ipheion should be planted in a sheltered place. Great for rock gardens, between steppingstones and as edgings.

Ipheion are hardy and like other bulbs, easy to grow in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. The blooms last longer in partial shade locations. The Ipheion can be planted in Fall when the soil temperature falls below 55F to make sure they root well. The best planting time is when the night time temperatures are between 40-50F. For best results, Ipheion need approximate 12 weeks of temperatures below 50F.
