    Description

Fritillaria 'Lutea' has yellow pendant bell-shaped flowers topped by a crown of small leaves, lance-shaped glossy leaves.

Fritillaria ‘Lutea’ (Crown Imperial) is one the best-known species and one of the oldest bulbs cultivated. It has been cultivated for centuries and is often seen in Renaissance flower paintings. The flowers have a musky smell and if you touch the flower it drops a tear. All parts of the plant have a skunky odor which chases moles away. Bulbs are fragile so handle them carefully, plant them on their sides, this way water does not fill the hole left by the stem from the previous year which can cause the bulb to rot.

Fritillaria species differ greatly one from another. They have some of the most spectacular flowers, as well as some of the smallest and daintiest.  All of them exhibit bell-shaped flowers, generally hanging downwards from the top of upright stems which bear narrow leaves.

Fritillaria are hardy and like other bulbs, easy to grow in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. The blooms last longer in partial shade locations. The Fritillaria can be planted in Fall when the soil temperature falls below 55F to make sure they root well. The best planting time is when the night time temperatures are between 40-50F. For best results, Fritillaria need approximate 12 weeks of temperatures below 50F.
