    Description

Camassia cusickii has spikes with dozens of star-shaped sky blue to white flowers, bright yellow anthers. Flowers open from bottom to the top. Green narrow and rigid leaves.

Camassia, the name is derived from Quamash, an Indian word, it is native to western North America where it grows in the wild in the mountains and on the prairies. Although the bulbs, the stems and leaves are poisonous, the Indians ate the bulbs of certain species after cooking them. The plants have a wild appearance but the flowers are striking.

Camassia are hardy and like other bulbs, easy to grow in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. The blooms last longer in partial shade locations. The Camassia can be planted in Fall when the soil temperature falls below 55F to make sure they root well. The best planting time is when the night time temperatures are between 40-50F. For best results, Camassia need approximate 12 weeks of temperatures below 50F.
