    Description

Allium ‘Red Mohican’ has unusual burgundy-red flowers with extra tufts at the top, tipped with tiny white flowers to give the appearance of icy frost forming on the tips.

Allium cultivars belong to the same family of edible plants that includes garlic, onions, leek and shallots. There are several hundred species, but only about a dozen of them are cultivated to any extent. They offer a diversity of flower colors, height and forms, and make interesting focal points in the garden. When the foliage, flowers or bulbs are cut some of them may give a smell of garlic or onion. The flowers of most of the medium and tall species can be used as dry flowers especially after they have been dyed or sprayed. Most of these species flower in early Summer.

Allium are hardy and like other bulbs, easy to grow in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. The blooms last longer in partial shade locations. The Allium can be planted in Fall when the soil temperature falls below 55F to make sure they root well. The best planting time is when the night time temperatures are between 40-50F. For best results, Allium need approximate 12 weeks of temperatures below 50F.
