    Description

Garlic is easy to grow and requires very little space in your garden.  It is a member of the allium family and is an ancient bulbous vegetable.  Garlic grows from individual cloves broken off from a whole bulb.  Each clove will multiply in the ground, forming a new bulb that consists of 5-10 cloves.  Grow your own garlic to roast in the oven and spread on fresh bread or add it to your favorite family dishes!  Plant in the early spring in light sandy soil, that has been improved with compost or manure.

Planting Instructions: It is best to plant garlic in the early spring after the ground warms to about 50°F. Choose a location with light, sandy soil that has been improved with compost or manure. This will permit full leaf development. Gently separate the cloves from the bulb. Dig a hole 1" deep. Then, set each clove in a hole with the pointed end upward. Cover with 1" of dirt and fertilize once or twice during the growing season. When leaves turn brown lift the Garlic and hang to dry. Store in cool, dry conditions. It has been found that long days and warm temperatures favor bulb development in the garlic plant. The soil must be kept evenly moist as dry soil will cause irregularly shaped bulbs. Heavy clay soils will also create misshaped bulbs and make harvesting difficult. Add organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or compost to the soil on a yearly basis to keep it crumbly.
